چکیده

Biomass from cellulosic bioenergy crops is expected to play a substantial role in future energy systems, especially if climate policy aims at stabilizing greenhouse gas concentration at low levels. However, the potential of bioenergy for climate change mitigation remains unclear due to large uncertainties about future agricultural yield improvements and land availability for biomass plantations. This letter, by applying a modelling framework with detailed economic representation of the land and energy sector, explores the cost-effective contribution of bioenergy to a low-carbon transition, paying special attention to implications for the land system. In this modelling framework, bioenergy competes directly with other energy technology options on the basis of costs, including implicit costs due to biophysical constraints on land and water availability. As a result, we find that bioenergy from specialized grassy and woody bioenergy crops, such as Miscanthus or poplar, can contribute approximately 100 EJ in 2055 and up to 300 EJ of primary energy in 2095. Protecting natural forests decreases biomass availability for energy production in the medium, but not in the long run. Reducing the land available for agricultural use can partially be compensated for by means of higher rates of technological change in agriculture. In addition, our trade-off analysis indicates that forest protection combined with large-scale cultivation of dedicated bioenergy is likely to affect bioenergy potentials, but also to increase global food prices and increase water scarcity. Therefore, integrated policies for energy, land use and water management are needed.

Investigating afforestation and bioenergy CCS as climate change mitigation strategies

The land-use sector can contribute to climate change mitigation not only by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but also by increasing carbon uptake from the atmosphere and thereby creating negative CO2 emissions. In this paper, we investigate two land-based climate change mitigation strategies for carbon removal: (1) afforestation and (2) bioenergy in combination with carbon capture and s...

Reconciling top-down and bottom-up modelling on future bioenergy deployment

1 There is a divergence of views on future bioenergy deployment that is based in disparate epistemic communities. Integrated assessment models (IAMs) project rising deployment of biomass and biofuels in climate change-mitigation scenarios1,2. In contrast, life-cycle assessments (LCAs) and partial equilibrium models of land-use change emphasize high up-front greenhouse-gas emissions from direct ...

Climate Variability Impacts on Land Use and Livelihoods in Drylands

This edited volume is devoted to the examination of the implications of the inevitable changes wrought by global change on the welfare and livelihoods of tens of millions of people who live in dryland regions. Global change is more than just climate change and the ramifications of changing trade patterns (geopolitical and economic aspects), the shift to the market economy, demographic factors (...

Integrating place-specific livelihood and equity outcomes into global assessments of bioenergy deployment

Integrated assessment models suggest that the large-scale deployment of bioenergy could contribute to ambitious climate change mitigation efforts. However, such a shift would intensify the global competition for land, with possible consequences for 1.5 billion smallholder livelihoods that these models do not consider. Maintaining and enhancing robust livelihoods upon bioenergy deployment is an ...

Transition Potential Modeling of Land-Cover based on Similarity Weighted Instance-based Learning Procedure and Its Implication in the REDD Project Design Document

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a climate change mitigation strategy employed to reduce the intensity of deforestation and GHGS emissions. In recent decades, drastic land use changes in Mazandaran province caused a substantial reduction in the amount of Hyrcanian forests. The present research based on objectives of REDD projects paid to identify of fore...
